MARESH MEREDITH FUNERAL HOME Serving the family locally 803 Main Street 634-7888 GREEN BAY (AP) A lawsuit filed by the widow of a paper mill worker found inside a pulp vat with a weight tied to his neck keeps pressure on those involved to tell the truth, Police Chief Robert Langan said Tuesday. The wrongful death suit has beep amended and alleges that two coworkers beat Thomas Monfils and helped throw him in the vat at the James River Corp.

paper mill. A third co-worker provided the weight and rope tied around Monfils' neck, the lawsuit alleges. The original lawsuit named seven defendants but never specified their alleged roles in Monfils' death. No arrests have been made in the killing. Monfils, 35, was found Nov.

22, 1992, in a two-story pulp vat with a 40-pound weight around his neck. His body was found a day after three co-workers confronted him about a call he made to police to report one of the men planned to steal an extension Monfils' widow, Susan Monfils, filed the wrongful death lawsuit, contending the defendants conspired to cause her husband's death through intimidation, threats of physical force and the use of physical force. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. The defendants have 20 days to respond to the amended lawsuit. If the newest accusations are correct, "there's no doubt it could increase the pressure" on those involved in Monfils' death, Langan said.

But Langan said making allegations in a civil suit and charges in a criminal proceeding are two different things. "Nobody wants to bring them to court more than we do, but we get one chance on these, guys. The whole burden of proof is different," he said. Police know everything that attorneys who filed thej wrongful death lawsuit know, the police chief said. Police TEL, Mil.
