tht Journal Tlmi, Tuttday, Aug. 29, 1978 Of Racine, WH Vrf v''A" Federal agemcy warms Ford owraers Business briefs Evans buying rail company Evans Products which owns Racine Steel Castings said It has agreed In principle to acquire Railway Track-Work Bethayres, a manufacturer of rail maintenance equipment. Evans said it will purchase all of Railway Track-Work's stock for an undisclosed amount of cash and promissory notes In a transaction scheduled for closing about Sept. 13. Railway Track-Work, which has three shareholders, makes tie handlers, anchor crlbbers and grinding equipment sold to railroads for track maintenance.

John F. Felten, executive vice president of Evans, noted that the acquisition represents Evans' entry Into the main-tenance-of-way equipment market. Felten, in a press release, said the market bas "grown dramatically In recent years, and the serious need for further railroad track rehabilitation should ensure strong demand well Into the future." Evans manufactures and leases rail cars. The company has a fleet of about 24,000. Based in Portland, Evans also manufactures and leases truck trailers, retails building materials, produced custom-built homes, and manufactures building and specialty metal products.

It (the transmission problem) can otcur." Parrls had this advice for Ford ownert whose vehicles were manufactured be tween 1970 and 197H with C-8 or FMX automatic transmissions: Shut the engine off before leaving the vehicle. Make certain the gear selector Is In the park position. If possible, turn the engine off before putting It In park I'se the emergency brake, "There have been cases where just a slam of the door can move a car Into reverse and sturt It running backward," Par- ris said. The liSA urged other federal agencies to follow lis lead In removing Plntos from their fleets. The government began uslnp Pintos after the Arab oil embargo In 1973.

It was not Immediately known how many Pintos were In the overall government flit't of vehicles, which includes the interagency pool. WASHINGTON (AP) As one federal agency warns millions of Ford owners their vehicles may have lethal transmission defects, another agency Is removing sub-compact Ford Pinto from a federal motor pool until their gas tnnks are rid of potential fire hazards. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today issued a consumer advisory bulletin advising about 9 million owners of Ford cars and light trucks they should shut off their engines and make sure the gear selector Is firmly In the park position before they leave their vehicles. The agency said It Is Investigating complaints that Ford automatic transmissions on 1970 through 1978 models have slipped from park Into reverse. It said It has reports of 777 accidents, 23 fatalities and 259 Injuries allegedly caused by this problem.

The investigation could lead to a recall, which would be the biggest in history. "We are pursuing this Investigation on a priority basis and plan to complete It In the near future," said agency administrator Joan Claybrook. In Detroit, John C. Eckhold, director of Ford's auto safety office, said in a statement: "To date we have found no evidence that It (transmission slippage) In fact occurs when the transmission lever has been put properly In the park position. "It is clearly importunt thut drivers of all makes of cars use every safeguard to ensure thut the lever Is fully and firmly en-guged In the park position before leaving the vehicle, und we advise owners in the owner's manuul that the parking brake should always be enguged when a vehicle is parked," the statement udded.

Meanwhile, the General Services Administration, the government's housekeeping agency, says It is removing the 300 Plntos from Its Interagency motor pool because of reports that fuel tanks have caught fire In rear-end collisions. The GSA did not mention such Incidents occurring in the government fleet. While Ford already has announced a recall of 1.3 million Plntos and 30,000 Mercury Bobcats to correct the fuel tunk problem, the NHTSA Is studying possible recall of the 9 million Fords manufactured between 1970 and 1078 to fix the faulty trans-missions. It would be the largest recull in automotive history, Center for Automotive Safety, a private monitoring organization affiliated with Ralph Nader, says 100 accidents und 12 deaths huve been caused by irunsmiv failures in practically all Ford cars with 300cublc-lnch engines or larger and light trucks with engines of 350 cubic inches or more. Ford hus argued that the accidents might be caused largely by driver cureless-ness In putting the shift lever into park The company says there are no flaws In the transmissions.

While the NHTSA's 10-month-old study is expected to be completed next month, agency officials said consumers still should receive today's warning. "We keep getting complaints," suid Hal Parrls, a spokesman for the NHTSA. "While the Investigation is continuing, we wunt to alert people to the possibility thut i Savings flow into up drastically in July Hein board against bid Directors of Hein-Werner Waukesha, have unanimously urged shareholders to reject an offer by Founders of American Investment Corp. to buy 590,000 common shares, 50.6 percent of Hein-Werner's outstanding shares, for $9.50 a share. Mazda RX-7 price raised Mazda Motors of America, importer of cars built by Toyo Kogyo is boosting the price of its fast-selling RX- 7 sports car for the second time this month. The new increase averages 5.5 percent, or $405 a car. Price of the RX-7 model was raised $345 to $6,996.

Earlier this month, Mazda raised the price of the RX-7 about 4 percent, or about $275 a car, as part of an overall increase that averaged 3 percent across the company's car line.
